Neath Abbey Coin Hoards

It is recorded that two coin hoards were found by workmen in November 1956 and April 1957 whilst consolidating the west range of Claustral buildings which contained the accommodation of the lay brethren.
‘The west range contained a common room and refectory on the ground floor and a dormitory on the first floor. It is open to the sky now; but the first floor was originally stone flagged over a massive vault, and it was in a corner of the dormitory below floor level, that the first hoard came to light in a ‘cache formed by four stones’ contrived in the rubble which filled the space between the vault and the side wall. There were 100 coins but 17 of them were loose in the stones adjacent to this ‘cache’, and may have been displaced accidentally by the workmen. The 66 coins of the second hoard were found within 1 yard of the first, but at a slightly lower level and in a scaffolding hole of the main wall.’
